StashEm helps a household remember where its things are kept. What you save stays on your devices and in iCloud accounts that you and your household control. There is no StashEm account and no StashEm server holding your data, so we can't see it.

1. What you put in

StashEm stores what you enter: the things you keep, the rooms and places they live in, dates such as warranties and return dates, who something was lent to, notes, photos, scanned documents and receipts, values you add for an insurance report, and the names of the people in your household. None of it is collected by us.

2. Where it is stored

Everything is saved on your device first, so the app works without a connection. StashEm then keeps a copy in iCloud using Apple's CloudKit, so it reaches your other devices and comes back if you lose or replace your phone. That copy lives in your own iCloud account, or, for a shared household, in the household owner's iCloud account. Photos are stored at a reduced size, with their location, camera and date details removed.

3. Sharing with your household

When you invite someone, they can see and change everything in the household's shared space, including who saved or moved each thing and when. Sharing works through iCloud sharing, and you can leave a household, or stop sharing one you own, at any time. Because the shared data lives in the owner's iCloud account, members lose access to it if the owner stops sharing or deletes it.

A room, place or thing marked Only me is stored in your own iCloud space, not the household's. Nobody else in the household can see it, including the household owner. iCloud enforces this, not just the app.

4. Photos, documents and voice

When you speak to save or find something, your speech is turned into text on your device. Requests you make through Siri are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.

Reading text in photos, cutting a thing out of its background, spotting a duplicate, finding serial numbers, and reading dates and totals from receipts all happen on your device, using Apple's Vision framework and, where available, the on-device model of Apple Intelligence. StashEm never sends your photos, documents or voice to a cloud AI service. Anything read from a photo is offered as a suggestion, and nothing is saved until you confirm it.

5. Permissions

StashEm asks for access to the camera, microphone, photo library or notifications only when you first use a feature that needs it. If you decline, only that feature is affected; the rest of the app works as before. StashEm doesn't ask for your location or your contacts. Face ID, if you use it to lock things, is handled by iOS; the app only learns whether it succeeded.

6. Purchases

StashEm Plus is a one-time purchase made through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment, and we never see your card or billing details. So that everyone in your household gets Plus too, the app notes on your own household member record that you have it. That note is stored in iCloud with the rest of the household's data.

7. Anonymous usage counts and crash reports

To learn which features people use and fix what goes wrong, the App Store version of StashEm sends two things to PostHog, hosted in the European Union:

  • Counts of actions. For example: things were saved by typing, voice, camera or a photo of a shelf; a search found something or nothing; a thing was found through search or Siri; labels were printed; a backup was made; StashEm Plus was bought.
  • Crash reports. If the app crashes, a report of what went wrong and where in the code. Never what you were working on.

Each one carries only the app and iOS versions, the kind of iPhone and its language. We use them only to decide what to improve and to fix bugs, and we don't sell or share them.

  • Never sent: the names of things, rooms, places or people, notes, search words, photos, documents, voice or transcripts, values, email addresses, your iCloud identity, or device identifiers.
  • No address or location: your IP address isn't stored with them, and no location is worked out from it.
  • No profiles: PostHog builds no profile of you. Events carry a random ID that is new each time the app starts, so one launch can't be joined up with another. Nothing is used to track you across apps or websites, there's no advertising identifier, and screens are never recorded.
  • Your choice: turn this off at any time in Settings › Privacy & support › Share anonymous usage. That stops both the counts and the crash reports.

Test builds, including TestFlight, send nothing.

8. Other services

StashEm doesn't sell data and contains no advertising. Apart from PostHog's usage counts and crash reports as described above, the only services it uses are Apple's: iCloud and CloudKit for storage and sharing, the App Store for purchases, and Siri, Shortcuts and Spotlight on your device. If you send feedback by email, we receive your email address, your message, and the app and iOS versions included in it, and use them only to reply and to fix what you report.

9. Keeping and deleting your data

Your data stays until you delete it. Deleting something in the app removes it on every device in the household. To remove everything, delete the app and its data in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Account Storage. If you own a household, this also removes its shared data for everyone in it, so make a backup first. Leaving a household removes its shared data from your devices; your Only me rooms stay with you. You can export a full backup from the app at any time, for free.

Apart from emails you send us, we hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to give you a copy of, correct or delete on request. Usage counts and crash reports can't be traced back to a person, so they can't be found or deleted for one either. If you have a privacy question or request, email us and we'll answer it.

10. Children

StashEm is not directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect information from them.

11. Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it. Important changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
